Court leaves insolvency administrator Spruds in custody

RIGA, Oct 12, BNS - Riga City Latgale District Court on Thursday ruled to leave former insolvency administrator Maris Spruds in custody, Latvian Television reported.

The court will revise the necessity for Spruds’ detention in two months’ time.

Spruds was first remanded in custody on June 9. All previous attempts to secure his release have been unsuccessful. Spruds’ defense lawyers had sought their client’s release on bail and proposed home arrest.

Spruds claims the case against him is groundless.

Insolvency administrators Nauris Durevskis, Maris Spruds and Ilmars Krums were all arrested on June 9. One more person, Jorens Raitums was also detained, but he was released a couple days later.

Krums, Spruds, and Raitums are suspects in a criminal case on extortion in an organized group and money laundering. In another criminal case, Durevskis is suspected of attempted extortion.

Spruds, his wife Ilze Gulbe, and the Justice Ministry's former parliamentary secretary and former National Alliance secretary general Aigars Lusis also feature as suspects in a criminal case that deals with suspected violations during the insolvency proceedings at the Dzimta Seta and Peltes Ipasumi.
