MPs will have the opportunity to debate how to use budget funds more effectively - Murniece

RIGA, Oct 11, BNS - Saeima members will have the opportunity to debate how to use budget funds more effectively, Saeima Speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance) said in an interview with Latvian Television this morning.

She indicated that there will be no additional money for new budget proposals and that the so-called lawmakers’ quotas have also been abolished.

The Saeima speaker predicted an exuberant debate on Latvia’s 2018 budget, with the opposition likely to slam the draft budget as awful and not ensuring the state’s existence. In Murniece’s opinion, that the government has taken a responsible approach to the budget.

All countries need more and more resources to meet various needs, Murniece said. Latvia is no exception, and more resources will be needed in the years to come. To provide this money, it will be necessary to clamp down on shadow economy, Murniece said.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday approved Latvia’s 2018 budget bill, under which revenues are expected to grow by EUR 725.11 million from this year to EUR 8.75 billion, and expenditures are projected to increase by EUR 624.82 million to EUR 8.95 billion.

In 2017, Latvia’s budget revenues are planned at EUR 8.03 billion and expenditures at EUR 8.33 billion.
